Maatschappelijke Ontwikkeling

Cricket - A lifelong fascination

For more than sixty years, cricket has been part of my life. What began as a childhood sport became a lifelong source of friendship, learning, travel, reflection and inspiration. Cricket taught me lessons about leadership, teamwork, responsibility, resilience and respect long before I encountered these concepts in business, management and personal development. Over the years I discovered that cricket is much more than a game. It is a way of looking at people. A way of building communities. A way of dealing with success and failure. And perhaps even a way of creating a better society.

What cricket taught me about life

Cricket is often described as a gentleman's game. Not because gentlemen play it. But because it challenges people to behave with dignity, self-discipline and respect. The Spirit of Cricket asks players to compete fiercely while respecting opponents, teammates, officials and the game itself. Those values have deeply influenced my own thinking about: personal development leadership, career development, employee engagement, citizenship and society. Many of the ideas that later found their way into my books and development programmes were first experienced on a cricket field.

The connection with my development projects

Nilo & Nova - Nilo & Nova helps children discover wonder, friendship, balance and social-emotional skills. Cricket teaches exactly the same lessons: How to work together? How to lose? How to win? How to respect differences? How to keep learning?

NU & DAN Career Development - Every career is a journey. Cricket players continuously reflect, learn and adapt. ‘Look in the book’ is an ever returning reality. Face the music and learn fron the past. The same applies to people in their working lives. Who am I? What are my talents? What is my purpose? What is my next step? These questions lie at the heart of both cricket and career development.

AANDACHT - Healthy organisations are built on trust, engagement, responsibility and meaningful relationships. Successful cricket teams operate in exactly the same way. People perform best when they feel valued, respected and connected to something larger than themselves. That is the essence of AANDACHT.

A Game of Peace - In Search of the Spirit of Cricket
A Game of Peace tells the story of three friends from The Hague who set out on a journey around the cricket world. Their original question is simple: "What is the Spirit of Cricket?" Their search takes them to England, South Africa, India, Pakistan, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, North America and many places in between. Along the way they meet players, coaches, supporters, teachers, journalists and leaders. Gradually their search changes. The Spirit of Cricket becomes a search for something even bigger: The Spirit of Humanity. The book explores how values such as respect, fairness, dignity, resilience, responsibility and hope can contribute to a better society.
